Our good friends at Butcombe not only supply us with their own traditional cask ales, but with many of the regular favourites you might see at the Beer Emporium. You might not expect your German Pilsner or your American Pale Ale to come from a family brewery in Somerset, but they are one of the best suppliers of International Beers in the South West. We spoke to the lovely Tom to get an insight into the brewery and his own Beer taste! The brewery is based in Wrington and is the biggest new-build brewery in the last 35 years. As for Tom, his favourite Butcombe Beer is their flagship and original beer, the Butcombe Bitter. In fact, for the first 21 years (1978 -1999), the Bitter was the only beer brewed at Butcombe, so they had plenty of time to perfect the recipe! When Tom pops down to The Beer Emporium at the weekend, he often goes for Veltins, a nice crisp German Pilsner – a refreshing reward for a hard week’s work at the brewery! Their seasonal cask beers are always a winner here, and recently we’ve enjoyed the Old Vic Porter – a lovely toasty session porter, which couldn’t be better suited to our position right opposite the Old Vic. They have recently started kegging the Haka, which is on Keg here at the moment. Its full and malty, with a hint of sweetness and a long bitter finish. Come and get it soon, it won’t be hanging around for long!
